Irish Born Chinese

Chinese is one of the hardest languages to learn?

Apparently it is, I presume they are talking about "Mandarin" as opposed to "Cantonese". This doesn't include write, so just speaking and reading.

I would have thought Mandarin would be easier for people who speak English to pick up as the tones are quite close to English. And those who become proficient in Mandarin speaks near perfect "Beijing" Mandarin.

Whereas Cantonese has a more complex range of tones, and no matter how much you try, if you did not grow up speaking it, one can instantly tell (even I can tell).

Writing is different as well, it's between Traditional (HK & Taiwan) and Simplified (China). Again, I presume that it's Mandarin the article is talking about, therefore it would be Simplified Chinese the people would be learning to read.
