Irish Born Chinese

Spring Lantern Festival

Created Sunday, 12th February 2017, 16:41 by Whykay

Spring Lantern Festival is a Chinese festival that is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month, and the last day of Chinese New Year. It also means the Chinese equivalent of Valentine's Day.

It's also a time when folks eat sweet sticky dumplings called "tong yuen" (湯圓), they are made of glutinous rice flour and is rolled up into a ball, it has fillings like peanut, sesame or red bean (the ones I've ate anyway :-)). They are boil in water (with ginger and rock sugar), and are super satisfyingly filling, especially as a dessert.

You can buy them at your local Chinese supermarket like these ones from Asian Market on Drury Street in Dublin.

You can find out more about the Spring Lantern Festival and its origins from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lantern_Festival.
