Irish Born Chinese

Banana?

Created Sunday, 28th October 2012, 16:30 by Whykay
Interesting read about another person's view on the word "banana", well, initially in the article, but it's a good read. I have to admit though, I haven't been called that for a long time, and sometimes when it pops up in articles I come across, memories of being called that by adults and not knowing why it was so funny from their point of view. Well, it was harmless as I grew up compared to other types of name-calling you get from kids in schools as opposed to Chinese grown-ups who pick on me when I was young, ok... more like poking fun at me every so often. Maybe it's endearing, never really thought much about it, even now. I kind of wave it off. Still it's less harsh than getting picked on by non-Chinese people. On a lighter note, Bananas and Coconuts was going to be a title of my Irish born Chinese site when I was looking for a title back in 2002. Was talked out of it because it maybe construed as a little racist, even though I thought it was a light-hearted poke at those names and share the same sentiments as others oversea born Chinese. Oh well... Sure, here's one of my earliest articles titled "What is it like being and IBC Banana?".
